  Berks County is seeking an Assistant Director to join the Planning Commission. This key leadership position will assist the Executive Director and is responsible for overseeing departmental operations, programs, and strategic initiatives. The role provides guidance to staff, manages projects, and supports effective decision-making that advances the County’s comprehensive planning goals, land-use policies, and community development strategies.

  Key Responsibilities:
This role involves, but is not limited to, the following functions:
• Support preparation, monitoring, and management of departmental budgets, including financial reporting.
• Oversee staff scheduling, leave approvals, and timesheet management.
• Develop and implement departmental procedures and policies to improve efficiency.
• Engage with municipalities, developers, agencies, and community stakeholders to implement planning programs.
• Lead and participate in special projects, studies, and community engagement initiatives.
• Foster a collaborative, professional work environment that promotes teamwork and staff engagement.

Minimum Qualifications:

• Bachelor’s degree in Urban/Regional Planning, Public Administration, Geography, Architecture, Civil Engineering, or related field.
• At least seven (7) years of progressively responsible planning experience, including three (3) years in a supervisory or management role.
• Experience with a Metropolitan Planning Organization (MPO) preferred.
• Equivalent combinations of education and experience may be considered.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
• Comprehensive knowledge of regional and community planning principles and practices.
• Strong understanding of local government structures and decision-making processes.
• Proficiency in using technology to manage planning data and support evidence-based planning.
• Skilled in organizing and directing complex projects across multiple planning disciplines.
• Excellent facilitation and stakeholder engagement skills.
• Strong interpersonal abilities to build cooperative relationships with officials and community partners.
• Independent judgment, creativity, and sound decision-making in complex planning issues.
