PA Fights Dirty
Every Litter Bit Matters when it comes to keeping Pennsylvania clean and free from litter. And more than 90 percent of Pennsylvanians agree that litter is a problem that needs to be addressed.
Our roadways have about 1,000 pieces of litter per mile. The unsightly trash strewn across our commonwealth has major negative effects – it harms property values, business attraction, quality of life, health and safety, visitor attraction, and so much more.
While only 3 percent of Pennsylvanians say littering is OK, about 40 to 50 percent of Pennsylvanians litter. That’s because many people do not recognize their actions as littering, or they think a small piece of litter is no big deal. But it is.
Little litter stacks up.
Small pieces of trash are a big problem in Pennsylvania. In fact, trash under 4 inches in size makes up more than 85 percent of the more than 500 million pieces of litter on our roadways.
Candy wrappers, scratched-off lottery tickets, receipts, bottle caps, cups, lids, chewed gum, cans, bottles, etc., etc., etc. This little litter stacks up to a big problem.
Little actions make a difference.
Pocketing your wrappers, bottle caps, receipts, and other small trash until you reach a garbage can will make a huge difference in the amount of litter in Pennsylvania.
And keep in mind that any time you do not dispose of your trash properly, it is littering. This includes leaving your food wrappers and cups behind in a stadium, piling your trash next to an overflowing garbage can, or dumping items next to a donation box.
