What’s it like being a Planning and Zoning Support Specialist at Ferguson Township?

The Planning and Zoning Support Specialist plays a crucial role in the Planning & Zoning Department at Ferguson Township, responsible for file management, coordination, and permit process tracking. This position requires the ability to manage a diverse range of activities, requiring regular interaction with the public while handling sensitive and confidential information. The Specialist operates under the general supervision of the Director of Planning & Zoning and provides essential support to the entire department. This role not only fosters development in local government practices but also contributes to the seamless functioning of the department’s initiatives.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Provide direct administrative support to the Director of Planning & Zoning.
  • Accept and review applications, plans, and permits for completeness.
  • Maintain organized filing systems and archival records for planning documents.
  • Prepare correspondence, reports, certified letters, and other documentation.
  • Perform data entry and basic GIS-related tasks.
  • Maintain and update departmental electronic records and databases.
  • Generate and compile reports as needed.
  • Coordinate meetings for boards and commissions, including scheduling, materials preparation, and attendance.
  • Prepare and distribute meeting minutes, particularly for the Planning Commission.
  • Compile and distribute meeting materials for Planning Commission, Zoning Hearing Board, and other committees.
  • Prepare monthly department reports for the Board of Supervisors.
  • Distribute subdivision and land development plans for review.
  • Maintain property-related records and databases.
  • Notify Centre County Emergency Communications and the school district of new addresses and developments.
  • Communicate regularly with residents, developers, and the public, providing excellent customer service.
Requirements
 
  • Bachelor’s degree required; degree in Urban Planning, Business, Social Services, or related field preferred.
  • At least one (1) year of related administrative or clerical experience.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office 365.
  • Experience with Esri ArcGIS preferred.
  • General understanding of planning, zoning, and land development processes.
