Southwest Section Event: Urban Tree Canopy Loss…

June 13, 2018 @ 9:00 am - 11:00 am

Urban Tree Canopy Loss in Allegheny County Between 2010 and 2015 and What We Can Do to Stop It

Register Now

Please join the SW Section of APA/PA to hear Matt Erb from Tree Pittsburgh discuss the results of a tree canopy study they performed in Allegheny County.  In just 5 years time, Allegheny County lost over 11,000 acres of tree canopy. This first-of-its-kind analysis shows the impact on our forests from pests, such as the emerald ash borer, land use planning and infrastructure redevelopment. Along with the loss of these trees goes the ecosystem benefits that they provide residents including: stormwater management, carbon sequestration, air pollution removal and energy savings. New research is making the connection between trees and human health.  This massive reduction in canopy can only have a negative impact on residents’ health. After Matt’s presentation on the study, stay and hear an expert panel including, Gary Koehler, Fox Chapel Borough Manager; Megan Turnbull, attorney;  Ray Kraynyk, Allegheny Land Trust;  and Steven Horhut, arborist.  They will discuss the challenges in administering tree preservation ordinances, different conservation techniques, and the things that arborist need us to know. (This is a rescheduled event)
