Join the Mid-Atlantic Planning Collaboration for the next webinar in the resiliency series, highlighting the resilience planning efforts at the North Carolina Department of Transportation. The North Carolina Department of Transportation (NCDOT) recognizes the critical role transportation plays in fostering societal well-being, economic growth, and environmental sustainability. In the face of increasing challenges posed by climate change, extreme weather events, and other disruptions, NCDOT is committed to ensuring the resilience of its transportation infrastructure. This presentation provides an overview of NCDOT’s resilience activities, outlining the strategic initiatives and innovative approaches employed to mitigate vulnerabilities and enhance the adaptability of the state’s transportation systems. The principle drivers for the development and application of NCDOT’s resilience studies are both: state driven initiatives through Governor Cooper’s Executive Order 80 that directed cabinet agencies to integrate climate adaptation and resilience into plans, policies, programs, and operations to support vulnerable communities; and recent additional federal support through the Promoting Resilient Operations for Transformative, Efficient, and Cost-saving Transportation (PROTECT) Program that has provided NCDOT with the opportunities to make more resilient North Carolina. Attendees will learn about the techniques being used to leverage data analytics, predictive modeling and advanced technologies to identify vulnerabilities and prioritize mitigation efforts. Presenters will also highlight community based outreach and engagement strategies that build awareness and incorporate local perspectives into regional and state planning efforts. The presentation will share case studies for planning projects that leverage local efforts, state agency coordination and regional transportation planning organizations insights.
