Assistant Planner



Whitemarsh Township is seeking qualified applicants for the newly created Assistant Planner
position within the Planning and Zoning Department. Reporting directly to the Director of
Planning and Zoning, the Assistant Planner supports the Director of Planning and Zoning in
various functions. The ideal applicant will have a bachelor’s degree in planning, community
development, public administration, civil engineering, or related field. We seek energetic,
detail-oriented individuals who possess a good sense of humor, strong communication skills,
who work well in team settings. Experience in the public sector is desirable, but not required.
This position is a great opportunity for an entry level professional seeking experience.

Job Requirements


  • Perform preliminary permit application reviews, screen for completeness, and provide guidance
    for application submissions
  • Work on tasks to satisfy in-kind service requirements for DVRPC-funded Multi-Modal TCDI granted study
  • Draft zoning amendment reviews
  • Draft new subdivision/land development reviews
  • Perform research in support of various proposed land use regulation amendments
  • Explain zoning and permit requirements to members of the public and developers
  • Attend Zoning Hearing Board, Planning Commission, and various project meetings, as required
  • Other duties as assigned by the Planning and Zoning Director or Township Manager.


  • Knowledge of modern municipal government, applicable Township ordinances,
    and the Municipal Planning Code.
  • Knowledge of community planning and zoning practices.


  • Proficiency with GIS Software such as Traisr, and Microsoft Office applications
    such as Word, Excel, and Outlook.


  • Ability to review and decipher plans for subdivision and land development, grant
    applications, and various reviews.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with the public,
    other employees, and Township officials
  • Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing
  • Ability to manage time effectively and work on multiple projects at once
  • Ability to work remotely, if needed
