Job Description


Lower Merion Township (pop. 59,850; approx. 24 square miles) is a first ring, full service, suburban Philadelphia municipality well known as a vibrant and affluent residential community. The Township operates under the council/manager form of government. The Director of Building & Planning (DBP) is a member of the Township’s senior leadership team, a working department head, reports to the Township Manager; responsible for 28 full time employees.

The DBP enforces Township codes relating to construction, housing, subdivision, and zoning; responsible for community & economic development, zoning hearing & historical architectural review boards, historical commission, environmental & health advisory councils. Directs building, subdivision and zoning codes enforcement, inspections, investigations, reviews plans, permit applications and serves several boards for construction and environmental codes. Oversees difficult code enforcement decisions, inspection of building construction/renovation. Enforces Township regulations relating to land use, air pollution, alarm systems, building construction, contractors licensing, electrical standards, erosion control, property maintenance, fair housing, historical districts, natural features code, noise, health, plumbing, security of buildings and zoning. Issues citations and represents the Township in proceedings in District Court, Common Pleas Court, and other legal venues.

Job Requirements


Requires a bachelor’s degree in planning, engineering, architecture or a related field, plus a minimum of 7 – 10 years of public administration, including supervisory experience or an equivalent combination of education and qualifying experience. A master’s degree preferred. Expected salary range of $100k – $110k DOQ, plus excellent benefit package.
