City of Pittsburgh Seeking Senior Environmental Planner

Job Position

Senior Environmental Planner

Job Description

The City of Pittsburgh’s Department of City Planning (DCP) is hiring two (2) Environmental Planners, one as a Principal Planner position and one as a Senior Planner position. This is an exciting opportunity for the City and DCP as we have been able to add capacity to our environmental planning efforts here in Pittsburgh for 2018. The two planners will work both as a two-person team leading, managing, and participating in environmental planning efforts and reviews for the City and as a part of the team in DCP’s Strategic Planning Division assisting the other planners by tying environmental planning goals to the land use and comprehensive planning efforts being undertaken by other planners.

Pittsburgh has a host of environmental opportunities. The three rivers it is most known for provide both recreational and transportation options for the City. Its hillsides provide green throughout almost every section of the City and provide for breathtaking views. A history of planning for green infrastructure opportunities, habitat, parks, and open space in addition to strong environmental stewardship initiatives by the City and its nonprofit community have provided a platform for engagement on the issue. These opportunities come with challenges that these positions will be expected to face head on, such as the challenge of managing stormwater through City-wide, neighborhood, and park planning efforts, determining how the City manages development in sensitive areas such as landslide-prone soils, floodplains, undermined areas, and steep slopes, and identifying opportunities to fund and create green infrastructure and open space projects in conjunction with our City partners (Pittsburgh Water & Sewer Authority, Public Works, and others).

Senior Environmental Planner (https://www.governmentjobs.com/careers/Pittsburgh/jobs/1982448/announcement-bid-for-the-position-of-senior-planner-environmental?pagetype=jobOpportunitiesJobs) – This is an existing position that is replacing a staff person who left for a great opportunity in another city. They were involved in a wide range of exciting projects from park planning or rehabilitation to stormwater reviews (including management of the City’s Stormwater Trust Fund) to setting up stewardship programs for gardening vacant lots (the Adopt-A-Lot program) and our undeveloped hillsides (the City’s Greenway system). This person should also have a good depth of experience in the topic and will be expected to work independently and as a part of a team, but is expected to have less experience than the Principal Planner. A Master’s degree in Planning, Urban Design, Engineering, Architecture, Landscape Architecture or a related field with two years of experience (or a Bachelor’s degree in those fields with four years of experience) is required.

How to Apply

Applicants must submit an application for both positions to be considered for both. Applications must be submitted through the City’s Online Career Center (https://www.governmentjobs.com/careers/pittsburgh)
