JOB SUMMARY: Professional work involving short- and long-term city planning activities. Require knowledge of comprehensive land use and urban planning principles and practices. Responsible for managing multiple projects and interacting and communicating with the public and private sectors.

SPECIFIC DUTIES: The duties of this job include, but are not limited to:

1. Develop, maintain, and update the City’s Comprehensive Plan and other core planning documents associated with the Department of Planning and Neighborhood Resources, such as the Active Erie Transportation Plan, the Historic Preservation Plan, and various adopted neighborhood plans.

2. Stay updated on emerging trends, technologies, and best practices in urban and regional planning.

3. Research, analyze, and report on social, economic, regulatory, and environmental data associated with a variety of city projects.

4. Develop and implement comprehensive community outreach and engagement strategies to incorporate feedback into planning processes; support Neighborhood Resources to expand public engagement opportunities.

5. Identify community problems, issues, and opportunities in city neighborhoods that could be mitigated through community planning efforts.

6. Review planning documents for completeness, accuracy, and compliance with established city policies, ordinances, and plans.

7. Understand and utilize mapping software (GIS) to accomplish required tasks specific to each project.

8. Conduct field work as necessary.

9. Research funding sources and assists in grant proposals.

10. Attend or facilitate meetings in the absence of other department staff. Attend occasional evening and weekend meetings.

11. Perform other duties as assigned.

Requirements 

 

MINIMIM QUALIFICATION:

• BA in Urban Planning, Architecture, Public Policy or a closely related field, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
• 1-2 years of related planning experience is preferred.
Experience preferred:
• Knowledge of GIS programs and applications is highly desirable.
• Creative problem-solving skills to gather relevant information in solving practical problems and addressing citizen inquiries and concerns.
• Ability to review plans and apply provisions of the ordinances and codes to determine compliance with such regulations and to apply regulations to field conditions.
• Ability to create graphic designs, visual outputs, and sketch site plans and/or computer graphics highly desirable.
• Ability to work both independently and in a team environment.
• Effective written and verbal communication skills.
• Ability to facilitate in-person and virtual public participation activities.
