Ruth I. Shirey, a professor emerita in the Department of Geography & Regional Planning at Indiana University of Pennsylvania (IUP), and an expert and authority on geography education, died unexpectedly and suddenly at her home in Indiana, Pennsylvania on Friday, February 20, 2015. Memorial Service Information:

On Friday May 1st, the Department of Geography & Regional Planning is having a memorial program for Dr. Shirey at 7PM in the PNC Room of the Kovalchick Center. The program will follow the Department’s annual Gamma Theta Upsilon banquet (which will run from 5:30 to 7PM) and will involve some formal comments regarding her career at IUP, followed by more informal thoughts, ideas, and remembrances by Dr. Shirey’s colleagues, students, and friends. All who attend are invited to participate, and will be provided an opportunity to speak if they would like to.

On Saturday May 2nd, a memorial service will be held in Ruth’s honor beginning at 1PM at Zion Lutheran Church, 100 S 6th St, Indiana, PA. This service will include eulogies, as well as organ music. All are invited to spend some time remembering and celebrating Dr. Shirey’s life.
