About the PA Chapter

About the PA Chapter of APA
The PA Chapter of APA is a nonprofit, non-partisan organization for professional planners and planning officials in the Commonwealth. The organization is a chapter of the American Planning Association (APA).

Approximately 3,000 members strong, the PA Chapter works to promote planning at all levels of the Commonwealth through trainings, the annual conference, legislative monitoring, and public awareness efforts. PA Chapter of APA members participate with various statewide and regional groups with shared values and goals.

The Chapter is organized into six sections which provide local service to members and others through program meetings, local workshops, newsletters, and announcements.

The PA Chapter of APA is a partner of the Pennsylvania Municipal Planning Education Institute (PMPEI) together with Pennsylvania State University Cooperative Extension. PMPEI provides training to planning commission members, zoning officers, and zoning hearing board members throughout Pennsylvania.

Three special opportunities exist within the PA Chapter to support planning member education. The Pitkin Fund and the Spaulding Trust provide support for students enrolled in undergraduate or graduate programs in planning or related curriculums that have a demonstrated track record of preparing students to become planners. The Irving Hand Excellence in Planning Continuing Education Award provides an annual scholarship in the amount of $2,500 to support an outstanding Pennsylvania applicant who demonstrates excellence in the field of community planning, as well as a desire to enhance his or her expertise and/or develop new skills.

American Planning Association (APA)
The American Planning Association (APA) is an independent not-for-profit national educational organization which provides leadership in the development of vital communities. APA lobbies for national planning policies and monitors changes affecting planning. APA offers professional planner certification through the American Institute of Certified Planners (AICP). For more information about APA, please visit www.planning.org.
